by C.S. Forester Its about a green-coated British pes rifleman in the Napoleonic Wars, an age when rifles were a novelty and nigh of the military was red-coated and carried muskets. Private Matthew Dodd becomes separated from his regiment during a take and finds himself stranded behind enemy (French) lines in Portugal. With the fooling assistance of some natives, but mostly on his own, he harasses the French with his rifle and tries to prevent them from building a bridge circuit across the Tagus River. Its a remarkable tale of survival and cave man achievement, of a rank-and-file soldier who lives by his wits and slowly learns to patch up plans without orders, and shows leaders qualities and a knowledge of warfare. Its also a ignominious depicting of the conditions behind French lines in the Peninsula (meaning the Iberian Peninsula, which contains Spain and Portugal) at the crook point of Napoleons war against the rest of Europe. Basic anyy, the whole platter depic ts a semi-guerilla war in which starvation is the chief apparatus and the 2 sides must simply out-starve each other. Theres a deal out of atrociousness and death in it, and thats to be expected because it depicts war realistically and unsentimentally.

An odd thing about this book is that it depicts all the comparable events twice, alternating points of view between Dodd and a fistful of his French counter cut offs, a group of boyhood friends from Nantes pursuit their pal Sgt. Godinot. Theyre very just boys yet--decent enough kids, appealing characters, you really feel for them. And of course Dodd has postal code against them personally, its just that he cuts them all down one by one (more or less by chance) in his manage ! to survive and to get back to his regiment. You really feel the sorrow of being a French soldier at that time.
